01

The speaker suggests that European governments might be increasing military spending to distract people from economic problems at home. Do you think this is a convincing explanation? What other reasons might governments have for talking about war?

02

Russia lost an enormous number of people defeating Nazi Germany in World War Two — some historians say more than any other country. Given that history, why do you think fear and suspicion of Russia has stayed so strong in Europe for so long? Does that history change the way you see the current situation?

03

The audio describes a big gap between what European leaders say and what they can actually do militarily. In your experience, is it common for governments to promise things they cannot deliver? What happens when they do?

04

If a country's factories are closing down and its economy is struggling, does it make sense to spend more money on weapons? Who benefits from that kind of decision, and who pays the price?

05

The speaker compares Europe to someone "poking a massive bear with a stick they haven't even finished building yet." Do you find that image fair, or do you think there are good reasons for European countries to take a stronger position against Russia? What would a truly responsible foreign policy look like in this situation?
